Begun in 1998, Women~Land~Spirit is a Western Canada based creative arts and recording project celebrating Women~Land~Spirit with Carolyn McDade and her music.
Over the years it has evolved from a project to a movement.

Carolyn McDade was inspired by the land of Western Canada to write many  of the songs which make up the body of music of the Women~Land~Spirit Sacred Web Project.    In 1999 We Are the Land We Sing was recorded at Banff Centre for the Arts.  During the preparation for and following this recording the music began to inspire and conspire in many of us a deep and abiding desire to more fully live out the intention of this project to live with and love this planet and all the beings who inhabit it.

The Sacred Web Project is an opportunity for women to reflect on the interplay of women~land~spirit in their lives, through song, art, story, justice making, and ritual. It is an opportunity to respond to the deep and poignant call of earth and humanity living in relationship with one another.

Within our human lifetime, attitudes, assumptions, and decisions have had a massive effect on the life and health of our planet. The Women~Land~Spirit Project is a way of connecting the singing, reflection, and creative expression of women with a deep need to understand our relatedness with land. In this way we can more intentionally create sustainable ways of living that reverence the earth, one another, and the wider community of beings with which we share life and habitat.

How do we live with the land, the peoples of the land and ourselves as women of land, and touch the taut and shining thread that binds us, soul to soul, one to another, to mountains and wide lands, to the minute and fragile, the bothersome and threatening, all humming their way into the whole?

Who are we in this vast circle of relations?

While most of us are not making our living on the land, our living is of the land and this binds us together. If these are questions that speak to your spirit, we invite you to join us on the conversations page.  We also invite you to participate in circles of women who meet regularly to reflect on and sing about our lives and spirituality as related to the land with which we live.

This project began with the Harvest Moon Gathering, in the Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan, October 9-12, 1998.
Women from the four western provinces gathered to sing, reflect, create art, and develop simple ritual about Women~Land~Spirit. Participants from this gathering have  helped to organize further gatherings.
To learn more about the process of preparing for recording, and the events that followed it, please see

The regional gatherings are opportunities for circles of women to meet regularly and reflect deeply on Women~Land~Spirit. You are invited to join a circle near you.  If there is not one in your area, perhaps you would like to start one.  Check with one of the local contacts for ideas on where to begin.
